Quick Question: Would you?

July 21st, 2012 at 01:08 am

I've had the new-to-us couch and loveseat since last Thursday and am loving it, such a refreshing update over our old set. One of the deacons at our parish is a carpet and upholstery cleaner. I had him out for a quote: $160 for both pieces and $50 to scoth guard.

I mentioned this to one of my friends who said her daughter regularly cleans furniture with a rented cleaner and it has turned out just fine.

I don't know why I'm concerned, well, obviously I fear I'll ruin the like new Ethan Allen sofas.

Has anyone here ever cleaned furniture themselves? How did it turn out? I'm looking at saving a lot if I do it myself. The colors are beige and rose so some dirt shows.

No advice here. My oldest couch is leather and the upholstered one is brown and isn't that old yet!

I've sprayed sofa & chair with Scotch Guard, doing three 'coats' where hands tend to go when rising and double where hair touches on recliner. I used two cans...how much are they in your region? Does the set really need cleaning or just a few spots? Do you have one of those smallish, hand held steamers? I'd try that at an inconspicuous spot on the back and blot with a fluffy bath towel.

I don't have any logical advice. However, the professional cleaning and the scotchguarding would be worthwhile the first time just for peace of mind. First off, you can get a sense of what it will look like cleaned thoroughly, and the scotch guarding would mean that you could really enjoy the pieces - wouldn't live in fear of spills, pets, dirty clothes, kid accidents, etc.

I would definitely scotch guard it. It makes a huge difference in ease of cleaning stuff if you spill it. I've never had a stain not come out of something I have scotch guarded (except Sharpie). Both kids have barfed on our couch while ill and it's come out.

As for cleaning, ours was a pretty expensive sectional and I've done just fine taking off the fabric cushion covers and washing them on delicate/cold water wash and air drying with just a little dryer fluffing at the end to take out the wrinkles. They are a little hard to get back on, a two person job, but they do get there. It depends on whether you want to spend the money or risk a do it yourself thing. Once it's scotch guarded though it is so easy to clean.

I once cleaned a sofa that had been in a fire and had some smoke damage. Since there was nothing to lose I was aggressive and cleaned the heck out of it with foam cleaner, hot water, scrubbers, you name it. It came out pretty good and showed me that furniture is pretty hardy.

I agree with the value of scotchguarding the heck out of furniture, it really does lead to some insurance that the stuff will stay looking better, longer. I think if the professional's work leads to a little bit more peace of mind, then it might be worth it for the first time, at least.
